2 Sep 14 - Atoms BGW (Youth League) Boys U22/ (2014 Winter)

BGWs have won the Youth League Grand Final in Division 1.
This team always achieves beyond expectation - did so in Juniors and now has won the 2 GFs in Youth League - part of the men's Thursday night comp.
WHAT A TEAM........CONGRATS TO ALL....
AS THE HBA SAW IT....OCGA2 and Atoms BGW faced off in the Youth League 1 decider after both teams dealt a 1-2 punch earlier in the finals to send the minor premiers Shooters packing. The first half saw little between the teams as Atoms BGW edged it 21-20 but led by Jono Diver, who scored 17 second half points (23 for the match), Atoms BGW pulled away to win 51-42. For OCGA2, they were paced by Jack Kerin and Zane Lenden who had 14 apiece.

4 Mar 14 - Atoms Wolves Boys U19/2 (2013 / 2014 Summer)

Looking good, sitting second on the ladder with just the one game to go against the hap hazard bottoms team. Coming off a bye and also the long weekend, the boys may be a little rusty.....But who knows, they also may be well fired up. Its been a great season so far with much of what Martin has been putting in place.....falling into place. Go Wolves

11 Aug 12 - Atoms Uncouth Boys U30/ (2012 Winter)

If you have outgrown your division and interested in an open age group mixed competition, email Justin at wiseturtle@gmail.com. Thanks everyone for a great season!

28 Nov 11 - Atoms BGW Boys U17/1 (2011/2012 Summer)

On Saturday 28 November Atoms BGW BU17/1 once again demonstrated their talents in easily getting past the IC XAVS 28-12. With four fit players and two struggling with nagging injuries, and the XAVS containing a known great 3-point shooter, the Atoms played crushing defence to hold the XAVS to just 2 2-point field goals for the game, and 2 3s from star shooter. Jon starred on the defensive boards and Shavin stepped right up and didn't give nobody nothin'. Offensively the shooting and finishing was actually "off" a bit but the BGWs found ways to score, often generated by great assists and sometimes through amazing individual creativity. At times the party tricks came out, and in tubthumpin style, Cameron got knocked down, got up again, but also hit a basket while virtually sitting on the floor. Cameron and Mitch were the stars in offence, finding ways to score and ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking over. Ben ran without a break for most of the game and glued the parts together with his running and support and movement. Jason played a strong team game and generated lots of opportunities with his motion offence movements and great passing. The ability to soundly beat the opposition in division 1 without having their #1 game on the court, and with a couple of players missing, is an ominous sign for the other teams in the division. The BGWs have a bye in the final game before Christmas but are sure to come out firing when hostilities resume in February.

12 Feb 11 - Atoms Wolves Boys U15/3 (2010/2011 Summer)

FEB 12 - This week saw the welcome beginning of two new players in the side, Carter and Callum, friends of Connor’s (Thanks Connor) their introduction to the side was the perfect remedy for the much missed Dylan Curnow. Carter and Callum both tall and very handy under the ring proved to be the perfect foil for our other taller players. Allowing them to roam freer and take some outside rebounds last Saturday. Coming up against the SC Cobras currently 4th on the ladder was always going to be a tough match. Last game (first round) came down to the wire and we ended up drawing the game in full time. This game was to have a different ending. 6 all at half time it was an arm wrestle to say the least when Carter, Callum and Connor started to win the rebounds both offensively and defensively. After two weeks off with a hand injury, we welcomed back Hamish (the hammer) Tobias, and although a little rusty, he began penetrating the key in the second half and muscled the ball into Carter to score on three occasions. We then started to get away from them with some great rebounds and blistering passes from Oscar Sleeman together with grand gathers and layups by Azza man. Nicky, “the not so fuzzy anymore”  woke up and used his strong arms to bump out the opposition, and after a half time chuck!!! George “the getting freakier by the game” was pivotal in many strong turnovers in our favour. And one or two against!!! In the end we ran out victors 24 to 12 and cement ourselves in second place. Ever so close to the top.Nov 27 - Atoms Wolves under 15 div 3 - had another immensely satisfying win against a slightly smaller Nightmares Taylor team. Atoms began well jumping out to 8 points within the first 5 mins of the game leading 8/2. This game saw the real return of Connor Jordon who pulled down solidly many defensive rebounds. Oscar Sleeman was solid as always in offense and defence, but got called for two fouls for the same defensive move in two seconds. HE was not a happy camper and was sent to the bench fuming. Searching for a reason for his fouls, Oz questioned the ref on his decisions, and while the ref was doing his best to explain, an unsatisfied Oz let rip with the “Oh that’s B...S...” The whistle blew. A Tech Foul was called. The end of the first half. Score 22/8.
Second half begins with Oz rightly in the cool off box. NT began well, clawing back some of the deficit. They scored the first 6 points and got back to within 8 at the 6 minute mark. With some great defensive boards by Aaron “the kangaroo” Cutter and Connor “air up there” Jordon, Hamish and Winnie where able to get back in the game with many fast breaks, and that was enough to unleash the weapon, the sophisticated freak of the basketball court...Georgie Pyke Marcou. ‘The GPM’, as he is affectionately known, ended up on the end of most of most of these offerings and piled on the scores with a song and dance routine that Dancing with the Stars would have had to sensor.
Nicky “The Fuzz” Munyao again was terrific and He-Man strong, pumping the air when scoring consecutive two point shots after pulling the boards. Hamish “the Hammer” broke the lines and drove strong in the key, scoring twice and assisting another, and the whole team was firing. We ran out winners by 22 points in the end 52/20 and it was most satisfying. Well done guys, we should be nearing the top of the ladder. A good reward for a strong beginning to the season.

6 Dec 10 - Atoms BGW Boys U17/2 (2010/2011 Summer)

On 5 December Atoms BU17 div 2 BGWs really showed their overall quality; with numerous players below their best, and having a rare poor shooting day, the BGWs still ran out 33-27 winners against Downer Biscuits in a rough and virtually whistle-free match. After hitting virtually nothing in the first half and going into the break 12-19 down, the Atoms dug deep and gradually whittled away the deficit with some tough inside play and some improved shooting, while at the same time stepping up the defence. With a now virtually guaranteed spot in the 2 v 3 semi final, it is time to go after the unbeaten SA Giants and try to secure top spot.

5 Dec 10 - Atoms Pacers Boys U13/6 (2010/2011 Summer)

On dec 4 Atoms BU13 div 6 Pacers played below their best but ran out 25-8 against the IC Bullets after a sustained burst of full court pressure late in the first half. Pacers ran the floor hard and scored most of their baskets off fast breaks following Bullet turnovers. Josh stepped up and played an awesome game, scoring numerous baskets and making many steals and great passes. Max and Tom did the job well in the firing line with the full court pressure, and James followed offence instructions well, to get good looks from open positions. Lewi ran hard and showed the rest of the team how to play man on man defence. Next game is against Breakers Blue, another struggling team, and it is time for the Pacers to really show they want to play defence by keeping the Breakers to virtually nothing.

28 Aug 10 - Atoms BGW Boys U16/2 (2010 Winter)

August 28th Report
"Basketball is one third shooting, one third running and one third everything else" is one of the well known sayings of the coach of the Atoms Boys U16 div 2 BGWs. And never was this better illustrated than in the BGW's narrow semi-final loss to the Cougars on August 27. The Atoms played a near perfect defensive game, denying the Cougars any rhythm and making them work hard for every basket. The intensity was great and the running in transition excellent. Alas, despite creating twice as many opportunities as the struggling Cougars did, the BGWs' shooting was ice cold. Even still, with one minute left in the game the BGWs were only 4 points down and still in with a chance. Nothing was left behind in 60 seconds of mad scramble that saw the Cougars go to the foul line many times and the BGWs have two players fouled out (and the team finish the half with 15 fouls). The BGWs know that there is no such thing as too much shooting practice, and will no doubt be outdoors practicing every day until the end of the season. Cameron Reidy will have slept well on the night of the game, after playing the entire 36 minutes without a rest. Thanks to Kate for keeping the coach well informed especially given the scoreboard at MGS still isn't working properly.

August 21st
On August 21 the Atoms Boys U/16 div 2 BGWs sewed up second place going into the finals with a repeat of the June 5 demolition of the SA Bullets. After a frustrating first 6 minutes where many baskets bobbled out, the BGWs kicked into gear and turned a 6-10 deficit into a 19-10 half time lead with their strangling defence and hard running offence. The big guys kept the BGWs in the game early, Jon in particular finishing the opportunities that came his way. The trend continued after half time with the BGWs again outscoring the Bullets 19-10 to finish the game 38-20 winners. A solid contribution from every player again, Dean being really prominent this week - he is a versatile player with a good inside game, silky skills and a good perimeter shot. Despite his illness Andre again ran hard and worked the boards strongly. Next game is the first semi final against the unbeaten Cougars, to whom the BGWs lost last time by 3 points. If you want to see a great basketball game get your backside down to that one!

August 14th Report
The nightmare continued for the Nightmares on August 14 as the Atoms BGWs BU16 div 2 displayed their superior running, shooting and defence to record a 47-18 win. After a sluggish 4-10 first 5 minutes the BGWs went on an impressive 43-8 run for the rest of the game. Every player contributed. Cameron was awesome again with his silky skills, team play and high energy. Andre starred at the defensive end and must have caused at least 10 turnovers with his pressure - most of which resulted in baskets off fast breaks. Jon hit numerous baskets inside and could have had many more - and also went coast to coast once to top it off. Mitch is an amazing shooter when he is in the groove and is deceptively fast up the court. Dean was strong inside and creative and hard running. Ben hit some good baskets. Shavin dominated in defence and was creative in offence. Well done to parents especially Janis on the loud support! Final game of the home and away round sees us secure second spot assuming game result go as expected.
Atoms BU16 div 2 BGWs moved into second after Breakers' loss on 31 July but have put that position severely at risk by losing on 7 August to fourth-placed Titans. On 7 August, gone was the intensity from previous rounds, as the BGWs walked out of the blocks and faced a half time deficit of 8-20. After glimpses of hope early in the second half, the game again quickly faded and the BGWs went down 20-36. The Titans were superior in the paint at both ends, winning most of the rebounds and scoring relatively freely off their offensive rebounds, while the BGWs were generally out muscled and had trouble finishing on those occasions when the rebound came their way. The smaller BGWs were cold from the perimeter and the normally tight defence was ragged and flat. There were no individual highlights to mention. This is a rare bad game from the boys and better to get it out of the way now, leading into the finals. With the final two games being against the two weakest teams in the competition, it is an opportunity to increase the percentage gap and retain second spot. Report 7th August

25 Aug 10 - Atoms Black Boys U20/1 (2010 Winter)

Go Black. The last two weeks have been very exciting for the team and myself included. We have managed to beat the 2nd placed side twice “Balwyn Blazers” and the third placed side also. The team is playing really great basketball and gelling like a machine with a mission. “Curnows back and he’s not happy” And the great thing is that this seems to really work for the side. The rust is wearing off and the baskets are falling. Last week was a particularly good game as we hit the front early 7 to 3. We hit the half time break with five point lead and finished the half a little shabby. A big Roost from coach at half time and some smart plays saw us come out firing. Cheng was majestic under the ring, while fly and his look away, around the back, under the oppositions legs pass, is still playing on my mind!!!
Harry was solid under the ring, and when we needed it Sam Ashton landed a killing 3 point blow. Zach put the nail in the coffin and Keenan controlled the play all game, and contributing well with some great pull up jumpers. Well done team. Vanilla Gorillaz this week. And then a possible grand final birth. 25th August
Well we nearly lost our chances of making the finals this week, but some intense rebounding from Cheng and Fly we managed to scrape home by two points. We started a little late and were taxed some points accordingly. Down 21 to 4 at halftime we really needed to get or skates on. And that we did, running out winners with only moment to go 28 to 26. We Held them to just 5 points in the last half. Well done guys but the lesson here is NOT TO BE LATE!!!

25 Aug 10 - Atoms Green Boys U16/6 (2010 Winter)

Atoms Green had a bye in the last round and the team finished one point shy of top of the ladder. A Great effort from all. This season has been really terrific, with everyone contributing week in week out. With the Chance of a Grand final berth this week we are all pumped and ready to go. We beat the breakers last time pretty convincingly, and this time we have a better team in place. Aaron is back to his leaping best, George who seemed to misplace his MOJO has found it once again, Hamish lets his fingers and hands do the talking, Ozz is harder to move from under the ring than the proverbial brick shit house (pardon my back yard) but really I am even struggling!!! Hopefully Nicky will be back, Winnie is on fire and is the incept King, Connor has found some stand tall and deliver form, and Bailey did not play last time against this team, and is coming off a 26 point game last match. We know what we need to do and deserve to be where we are. Second is no excuse. News 25th Aug.

7 Aug 10 - Atoms Pacers Boys U14/6 (2010 Winter)

The BU14 div 6 Atoms Pacers kept their slim finals chances alive with a hard fought win on 7 August against the improving Shooters. Numerous times the Pacers established a lead only to see it pegged back by the Shooters. A half time 13-all tie became a 28-21 win as the Pacers got on top in the last 5 minutes thanks to a productive full court man on man defence. Max was outstanding with his work at both ends of the floor. All other players made signficant contributions with their hard running and disciplined defence and congratulations to Josh who stuck a few baskets away and continues to improve in his first season of basketball. 14 August is a Bye and then the final game on 21 August is against second placed SA Blue Devils - a game the Pacers must win to have a chance to take the fourth finals spot.

5 Aug 10 - Atoms S.L. Girls U16/1 (2010 Winter)

The Best win of the season. Last Saturday we played our arch nemesis Canterbury Cougars. They have only lost one game this season and that was against us in round 4. Saturday was to be much the same sort of contest, tough, fast and exciting basketball with little margin for error. We led the game mostly by 2 to 6 points and half way into the last half they got up by 2 points. This was to last only a short time as we clawed back the lead and headed further out in front. Some excellent screening by Emily Merry allowed for great penetration in to the key for Em Hosken and Millie. Fast hands in defence and intense guarding by Lotti, had them under extreme pressure all day without every really being able to score freely. Well done girls. Still undefeated in what is shaping to be great season.
